Free Operating System

After you have a computer you must have an Operating System to enable the computer to operates. The kind of operating system are called platform operating system. Between other things here the free operating systems for Personal Computer (PC) and some for Apple Mac.

GNU/Linux Family:

	ArcheOS - http://www.arc-team.com/archeos/ ArcheOS is an acronym for Archaeological Operating System. It is a GNU/Linux live DVD distribution, based on PCLinuxOS, with specialist software for archaeological purposes
	Ark Linux - http://arklinux.org Ark Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution designed especially for desktop use, easy to use even for people without prior Linux (or computing) experience while still powerful enough for power users.
	Arudius - http://arudius.sourceforge.net Arudius is a Linux live CD with tools for information assurance (penetration testing, vulnerability analysis, etc). It is based on Slackware (Zenwalk) for i386 systems and targets the information security audience.
	blag linux and gnu - http://blagblagblag.org blag is an operating system. blag has a suite of graphics, internet, audio, video, office, and peer to peer file sharing applications. You can replace a windows installation with blag.
	CentOS - http://centos.org CentOS is an Enterprise-class Linux Distribution derived from sources freely provided to the public by a prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor.
	Damn Small Linux a.k.a. DSL - http://www.damnsmalllinux.org Damn Small Linux is a business-card size (50MB) Live CD Linux distribution. Despite its minuscule size it strives to have a functional and easy to use desktop.
	Debian GNU/Linux - http://www.debian.org Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence the name GNU/Linux.

	Ging - http://glibc-bsd.alioth.debian.org/ging/ Ging is a Live system that you can burn on a CD. It is based on Debian GNU/kFreeBSD (which, as its time, is based on Debian, GNU and the kernel of FreeBSD).

	Grafpup Linux - http://www.grafpup.com Grafpup Linux is a desktop operating system with a focus on providing a complete and stable workflow for digital imaging professionals and graphic artists in a very compact package. It runs quite well as a live cd but with persistent storage for your data and a nice package management system for addon software. Packages can even be installed when running the OS from the live cd and will remain there when you reboot. It can also install quite easily to a usb thumbdrive or your hard disk and runs equally well. I've based it on the structure of Puppy Linux which is an amazing distribution created from scratch by Barry Kauler. The total size of the live cd is right around 80mb and the whole of the operating system loads into ram for amazing performance.
	grml - http://www.grml.org grml is a bootable CD (Live-CD) originally based on Knoppix and nowadays based on Debian. grml includes a collection of GNU/Linux software especially for users of texttools and system administrators. grml provides automatic hardware detection. You can use grml (for example) as a rescue system, for analyzing systems/networks or as a working environment. It is not necessary to install anything to a harddisk; you don't even need a harddisk to run it. Due to on-the-fly decompression grml includes about 2.1 GiB of software and documentation on the CD. You don't have to pay anything to use grml because it is free software!
	IndLinux - http://www.indlinux.org The goal of the IndLinux project is to create a Linux distribution that supports Indian languages at all levels. This "Indianisation" project will strive to bring the benefits of Information Technology down to the Indian masses.
	KANOTIX - http://kanotix.com Kanotix is a rock-solid Linux based on Debian-Sid, which contains the newest packages and recognizes more modern hardware than any other operating system in use today.
	KNOPPIX - http://knoppix.com is a bootable Live system on CD or DVD, consisting of a representative collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals.

	Mandriva - http://mandrivalinux.com Mandriva Linux (formerly known as Mandrake Linux) was created in 1998 with the goal of making Linux easier to use for everyone.

	Ubuntu - http://www.ubuntulinux.org Ubuntu is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available with both community and professional support.
	Xenoppix - http://unit.aist.go.jp/itri/knoppix/xen/index-en.html Xenoppix is a Knoppix-based live DVD distribution with Xen, a virtual machine monitor. The bootable DVD provides a host operating system (Knoppix) and two guest operating systems (NetBSD and Plan9), which are mapped to X11 using VNC in full-screen mode.
